  1. Great F1B Experiment

The Great F1B Experiment
From: Walt Ghio

The Great F1B Experiment was held under perfect conditions.  In the early morning we had a light rain.  Overcast sky and mild temperature the whole day.  Very light drift for the seven-round contest.  A breeze came from the West for the flyoff.

As you can see from the results the Great Experiment ended up with a very high percentage of maxed flights.  One dropped flight was results of changing model and not resetting the timer from a two-minute DT.  The second dropped flight was due to the model stalling in the glide.  I am not including the flights of Wang Huaqiang in the reviewing the flight data.  Out of 98 flights only the two flights were not 180 second flights.  Watching the flights during the day a good climb would then be a very slow glide to a good altitude and then DT.  I have never been to a contest with so many maxes.

It was decided to have an altimeter flyoff with the max set at six minutes.  Aram Schlosberg flew with two minutes left in the round and had the best air for a first-place results.  Larry Norvall s data was taken from a Simplicity timer the next morning for an unofficial third place.

As with most experiments you hope to get some results from the testing.  As you can see the Great Experiment did not show what would happen on a normal contest day by not having any thermal equipment.  I want to thank the fifteen flyers who took part in the  experiment  and hope they enjoyed the contest along with the few snacks and the writing pen.

Several of the flyers want we to hold a second Great Experiment contest.  I will have to think about this depending on what the FAI does about the present rules.
