John Malkin
From: Roger Morrell

It is with much regret that we tell you that John Malkin the well known NewZealand F1B sportsman and general all round modeler passed away 2 nights ago.  John was my first modelling mentor.  A long time ago, sometime before 1960 my uncle’s neigbour said to him your boys might like to join the local model aeroplane club. The neigbour knew the club because he was the jeweler in the town of Upper Hutt just north of Wellington NZ   Modellers , in particular John Malkin came in to have their mechanical stop watches checked and adjusted. It is no surprise to us now knowing that John was a serious competition modeller that he would want to make sure his flights were timed accurately. Back in those days it took over a month each way to take a steam boat to the World champs in Europe. People, including John would mail or ship their models there to be proxy flown.   John has represented NZ in 9 World champs from 1958 to 2001 flying F1B. In the first 3 the model was flown by a proxy. Then intercontinental air fares came down. John also wrote for the  Aeromodeller magazine reporting on the NZ Nationals.  John is well known for his Airfoil book. In the days before the internet he collected data on airfoils for model aircraft from all around the world, plotted the graphs and published the reference manual.  John also was a regular flyer in World Cup events around the world.  John was a major contributor both at the local club level and National in keeping model flying going. Both in performing admin tasks, finding flying sites and helping people fly. John’s biggest legacy to us was to show that you can take on impossible task and with research and hard work succeed.  The Airfoil book is an example of that. We also adapt the most unlikely things to make our aircraft fly better, that innovation is part of being a model airplane flyer. John was a true aeromodeller and sportsman as we say in FAI speak.
