Patterson Memorial Report and Results
From: Tiffaney O’Dell
The 6-minute flyoff rounds at the Patterson Memorial in Lost Hills on Saturday, Nov. 9, were an interesting lesson in air picking. The F1A field included Shlomi Rosenzwig, Brian VanNest, Andrew Barron and Johnny Mah-Gersting (Jr.). They lined up ready to tow up and there was an obvious thermal on the ground. Sevak Malkhasyan, who was helping to coach the juniors at the contest, told Johnny to tow up and launch immediately. He did and caught the thermal and was the only flyer to max. Shlomi towed up and circled downwind and launched, but didn’t catch the thermal, clocking 4:42. Andrew towed up and tried to chase after the thermal, but towed in and had to run back to the line for his backup model. He towed up again, launched and did just 2 minutes. Brian beat Andrew by 27 seconds to secure third place. Johnny ended up winning by picking the best air on the ground.
A similar thing could have happened in the F1B flyoff immediately following, but Blake and I didn’t quite get our act together and missed the thermal at the beginning of the 6-minute round. We bemoaned that decision for the entire 7-minute window. Here’s Blake’s description of the flyoff:
“Six minute F/O in B opened with a pretty clearly marked thermal about a minute before the round. Tiff and I were kicking ourselves for not just going right away. The air was no good for the next few minutes. Larry (Norvall) went about halfway through the seven-minute window, but it was clearly that the air wasn’t great. I can’t remember exactly when Walt (Ghio) went. Temperature just started to poke up with two minutes to go. Daryl (Perkins) launched in the beginning of that build and Adith (Alagiri) and I waited till the bitter end because it just kept looking better. I was the last to go with just under 20 seconds left. I had a nice climb, which gave me a good head start over Adith. He and Daryl were separated by four seconds at just over five minutes while I made the only max, DT’ing at about 40m.”
I want to thank Risto Puhakka for running the big events on Saturday, and Brian and Janna VanNest for taking over the mini events on Sunday when Risto had to fly out for business. The weather was spectacular with temperatures in the mid 70s and winds light and variable. Jeff Ellington won F1C as the only flyer. Ben Tarcher dropped the last round, but held on to beat Mike Pykelny in F1Q. I had the high time in F1G, but didn’t end up needing it as I was the only one to max both the 3 and 4 minute flyoffs. Jerry Fitch and I launched in questionable air in the 4-minute fly off (Walt Ghio had a long chase into a plowed field and decided to forgo the final flyoff), and our models circled nearly overhead for the entire flight. Each model was the highest at one point during the flight, but then they separated, going their own way, trading that honor as they tried to eke out the most time. Thanks pinky! Blake maxed out to make his solo win in F1H a happy experience. Janna VanNest was the only max out in F1S, while Larry Norvall took second and Ben Tarcher was third.
