  2. 2021 FAI FF AmCup Report— 3 contest to go
  3. Back Off

20- 20 Hindsight

Part of the recent confusion around altimeters is due to people not being up to date on the Sporting Code and part is due to the current global supply chain issues combined with a single source supplier.

Perhaps when there is a change proposed for the sporting code requiring a specialized commercial item such as the certified altimeter ,  the Q energy limiter or a future automated timing system the proposer should be required to present at the minimum a prototype of the device to prove that it feasible.  Then going to the next step perhaps the sporting code change should only take effect when at least one , or two ? sources are available for such a device.

2021 FAI FF AmCup Report— 3 contest to go

Oct.28, 2021

Let’s start with glider, F1A. Great competition between Enes Pecenkovic and myself this year. The cancellation of the Lost Hills February contests and rescheduling to October resulted in a situation that I could catch Enes by winning one of the 5 Lost Hills Sept-Oct. contests. I flew in 4, made 3 FO and placed 2nd, 3rd and 2nd. Enes won 2 of the contests securing his lead (all but mathematically). Enes got points in 11 of the 29 AmCup contests to date. Of these 29 contests flown, 9 had bonus points and Enes placed in 6 of them— a well desired win.

I’m holding a slim lead in F1H. Blake has many wins but only has 2 contest sites flown so he could take the lead with a win at either the Simpson Memorial or the AZ champs—Blake would win the tie breaker with a simple 25 point win. Now Mike Fedor has the only bonus point with his win at the Nats but would need to win 2 of the last 3 contests— perhaps Simpson Memorial and the AZ champs? Of the 29 contests to date only 13 had F1H participation and 6 with 2 or more entrants.

Jerry Fitch took the lead in F1B at the SWR AZ contest last January and never lost it although several tried to catch him. Of the 10 bonus point contests flown so far, Jerry placed in 6 of them. Alex Andriukov was 2nd needing a few more bonus points. Jerry can thank Sevac for taking the top bonus points in 4 of the last 5 LH contests. Alex does have a chance to take the lead but would need to win with 10 entrants at the Patterson or 8 entrants at the Simpson Memorial or Arizona Champs.

I could just “ditto F1B” for F1G this year except Jerry did not take an early lead and hold it. The now expected great dual between Jerry and Tiff O’Dell held true this year. The decider was Jerry’s 2 bonus point win at the MaxMen.  Tiff could win AmCup but would need to win either the Simpson or SWR AZ contest with 3 bonus points. New (to me anyway) is John McGrath in third place— I hope he flies a few more sites next year to give Jerry and Tiff more to think about. The Canadians made a good showing, Ladi Horak and Tony Mathews in 4th and 5th. Both hindered by travel restrictions and so only had 2 contest sites flown.

Faust Parker continues his F1C first place string. There was only one bonus point contest in F1C this year, won by Don Chesson. Don could take the lead by winning the Simpson Memorial and the Arizona Champs contests. Participation continues to drop, of the 28 contests to date only 13 had F1C participation and only 6 with 2 or more entrants.

F1P is in a similar low participant status, of the 28 contests to date only 7 had F1P flyers and only 2 with 2 or more entrants.  Mike Fedor and Bob Hanford are in a tie and both usually attend the Simpson Memorial so that contest will likely be the decider, although both have been known to drive to Arizona.

F1J is currently have a resurrection. Of the 28 contests to date 14 had F1J participation with 10 having 2 or more entrants. The Nats was the only bonus point thanks to a wayward glider flyer flying his Astrostar.  Faust has the lead here as well but Glenn Schneider and Mike McKeever could overcome him with a 1 bonus point win at Simpson Memorial or the AZ champs.

Electric time. In F1Q Ben Tarcher looks to repeat his last year AmCup win. He placed in 12 contests, winning 11, of those 11 contests, 7 had 2 or more flyers. To date, there was only 1 bonus point contest and that was at the Nats. Bob Sifleet and Mike Richards had a FO that Mike won.  Ben should buy Mike a dinner because had Bob won the NATs F1Q FO, Bob would likely be the AmCup winner this year.

Jack Murphy looks to repeat his F1S AmCup win with 11 AmCup placings so far with one bonus point win. Another bonus point belongs to Clint Brooks in 2nd place. He would need  another 1 bonus point win at either  SWR AZ or the Simpson Memorial KS to win since Jack has several *25 contest (* used in the excel score sheet so that score is not counted in the total due to having more than 4 scores or more than 2 scores at a single flying site). There is currently an unusual 3 way tie for 4th place between Larry Norval, Bob Sifleet and Julie Parker.

To Jack Greening’s dismay, the last event to be reported is F1E. Jack had asked on SEN why F1E was treated as second class citizen being higher in the FAI F1 alphabet hierarchy than other events being reported earlier. Two reasons Jack, 1st the order roughly reflects the timing of when the events came into AmCup. Some Am Cup History. Originally only F1ABC made up the AmCup (1989). A few years later Martin Cowley petitioned for F1GHJ to be included (1995) and Bruce Augustus donated the perpetual trophies. F1Q came next (2004). Then came F1P (2005) with SCAT sponsoring the perpetual trophy. Then F1E (2006).  Finally, F1S (2015) was added with Lee Hines sponsoring the perpetual trophy.

The second reason is for my ease of scoring (data input). For whatever reason, most CD’s report  the events in  ABCPGHJQS order and E for the few contest that hold it at the end (I’m passing the buck).  F1E usually has only 3 or 4 contests a year to score so its easiest for me to have it at the bottom of the spread sheet. So to be consistent, I’m moving F1S to be under F1Q thus reserving F1E its unique position in the AmCup Score sheet. To misquote, “The first should be last and the last should be first”.

In F1E this year, the non-magnet steering guys are in first and second, Bob Sifleet and Tom Ioerger, both winning 2 of the 6 AmCup contest and they are separated by only 1 point. Interestingly the other two of the six contests were won by Fred Terzian but because Fred did not fly at the only non-Lost Hills contests so only 2 of his 4 AmCup contests scores are counted (per AmCup rules). Perhaps the USA F1E group wants to discuss this and if so warranted make recommendation to SCAT for a F1E unique change to the 2 scores from only one site rule.

We are currently planning to have a 2021 Awards ceremony on Feb 19, 2022 (Saturday before Presidents Day Monday, ie the usual MaxMen weekend) in Lost Hills. We will assess the potential contest attendance which will drive the potential banquet attendance. Appropriate location is being worked but has not been secured. Hopefully our foreign friends will be able to attend as in previous years but only time will tell.

Thermaling in Texas,
Jim Parker

I agree with former President Obama who says while change can’t come soon
enough for some, for others it might be coming “too rapidly”  to feel
comfortable. Obama says change may be coming ‘too rapidly’ for many
(msn.com)

Examples: It’s wonderful that CIAM is strategizing for the future including
altimeters and autonomous timekeeping. Future thinking affords a plan
before it’s too late to consider possible misjudgements. The Covid Pandemic
has triggered many problems and speculations about the future. I personally
think Free Flight has a great future. The blue sky is irresistible for all.
Also, I think talk of SAM (Society of Antique Modelers) merging with
NFFS is ill founded. SAM is fundamental, and most basic to FF and should be
held in the highest regard as our roots. Just ask the FF Luddites.  What
would Bob White and Sal Taibi have thought?.   Gil Morris
