About Time Update

As most of you know we had the “About Time” project at Fab Feb at Lost Hills. This project was to investigate issues in doing automatic, more accurate timing of our flights based on the use of certified Altimeters. There are 2 certified altimeters for Free Flight, the All-Tee and the Neuron. Both of these devices are more than  just an altimeter and certainly in this application can better be called a flight recorder.  A team of about 20 participated in different aspects of setting up the program and anyone attending Fab Feb  was welcome to take part.  The program started with the Neuron so they got a bit of a head start and the program was extended to include the All-Tee as well.  Both Neuron and All-Tee teams exchanged information and shared it with technical experts, event organizers, sportsmen,  national officials and FAI officials etc. at all levels.
As with all the best laid plans of mice and men something  always goes a bit astray, most notably an atmospheric river upset quite a number of pre-contest test plans and also post-contest analysis.  For one participant there is nothing like having your partner’s beloved Audi sitting with a broken axle part in Bakersfield needing some TLC to distract you from important modelling work. So this means there is a little delay in getting the report  out. If you are one of those  people doing some of the initial work (you know who you are) keep on working on what you are doing.
If you otherwise were there, took part, have an observation or some wise words please don’t hold back.  Send them  in to SEN by replying to SEN.

Here is a high level opinion, just mine so far.

  • Very successful program both Neuron and All-Tee worked well and reliably in challenging conditions.
  • Fewer people took part than we had hoped but we captured extremely good information
  • This and other activities at the event  highlighted important flaws in the current manual timing system that that need fixing. With over 30 in a flyoff and limited resources it is challenging to get a sporting result by traditional methods.
  • Some refinement is needed as is further testing in different places and situations. We uncovered some very interesting information that will be invaluable.
  • The accurate information available on-line provides a high level of honesty, transparency, fairness  and accuracy as well as greater overall interest by providing  more information.
  • We are on the right track.  Is is About Time!
