Re: The Code, the Sporting One

From: Pierre Chaussebourg

As an answer to Aram and to the editorial, I should like to say that in the free flight rules, we time models from the start to the end of the flight.
The start is quite easy to determine as it is the moment when the model is out of the hands of the competitor or for gliders, when the model is free from the tow line.
But what about the end of the flight?

We have very accurate rules about the end of the flight: it is when the model touches the ground or disappear from the sight of the timekeepers.
How are you going to apply this rule without timekeepers ?
Everything we are doing with altimeters or other (?) instrument cannot apply this for the end of the flight.
As far as we’ll have this rule about the end of the flight , use of altimeters or anything else seems to me illegal !

We need to withdraw the existing rule and adopt a new rule which could be something like:  «  the flight is ended when the altimeter graph stops .
This may be in a tree, on the ground, in a hole or on the top of a hill or whatever….
This has nothing to do with the old rule…
So what do you suggest ?

Editor’s Comment

Pierre, you are quite correct in that the sporting code would need changing.  The thinking around doing some form of test in February and probably beyond is to figure out the best way and try a few thing before going through  the process of changing the sporting code.  If we look back at our past we were able adopt an existing standard “the Nordic” glider for our F1A  class.  We saw that it was something that worked.  If we look at F1P we thought we needed some thing fast so made a standard with testing it, maybe not so good.  Now we are in new territory, there are many issues, some unique to us some in the world around us We have done some altimeter timing , it a first step but it is not there yet. It is a big step, not just a technical issue but a process one too.  This not unique to us and our sport, lots of things  changing,  and changing quickly. We see issues , how do we best keep Free Flight alive. We have talked about lots of ideas so maybe try something and discuss before we change the Sporting Code.  We need to understand the real world issues.

About Time

From: chris.edge
Sir,
Again I read comments in your fine organ about timing. Most of the time (see what I did there !) I ignore them but on this occasion your editorial suggested there may be an opportunity to test options in a future contest.

Altimeters will never, as you note, cover all eventualities for a legitimate flight start or end, let alone things that can happen in flight that are within the rules, like mid-airs etc. Of course there is an approach that will cover all these situation and has been tested by a few across classes A, B and C and are certainly usable (and may already have been tested for all I know) in class E. Know what it is yet ?

For those who haven’t figured it out, an on-board video camera with micro SD card card (no need for direct transmission) can record any type of model start, end, and will even identify a mid-air; it can also be used to time an engine run, what’s not to like. They are cheap, light, reliable and the data viewed on most PCs without special software. I once wrote a protocol for use whereby a record was made of the contest, round, plus model and flyer identification as well as the total flight – it’s not difficult.

It’s time we stopped faffing (technical term) with altimeters and used a more appropriate tool.

Respectfully,
EoB aka CHE aka ‘Haggis Hunter’ aka ‘Tiddler’

America’s Cup status

From: Jim Parker

2023-11-02 Am Cup Results and Report
Only three contests left to be flown this year: Patterson at LH, Acton at Wayawanda and Arizona Champs at Eloy. Many of the events are “done deals” if one assumes the historical entrant numbers for the remaining contests. That’s an indirect way of saying that the top positions come down to bonus points. There or numerous “mathematical” scenarios that will make the end of this FAI FF competition season interesting in some of the events.

For example, Enes Pecenkovic is leading F1A with 112 points with a *25 tie breaker score. Brian VanNest is in second place with 110 points with a *27 tie breaker score. So, Brian needs 2 more bonus points for a tie-win. He has two good LH scores (30 &27) so a Patterson win would need 11 entrants for a 29-point win increasing his score to 112. Or he could win the Eloy or Wayawanda contest with 7 entrants (27 points) to improve his 25-point win at the Rocky Mountain Champs for the tie- win. That of course assumes Enes does not improve his score at any of these contests—so a 5-entrant contest Enes win at Eloy or Wayawanda would increase his score to 113. Now Brian needs more entrants / another bonus point for the tie-win.  [Ties are only resolved for first place. This is done by summing a fifth score regardless of site].

F1B is a tight race with Charlie Jones (107pts), Jerry Fitch (106), Blake Jense (105) and Walt Ghio (104).  I need an FAI AI (artificial Intelligence) program to figure out all the realistic possibilities. Three jump out at me: Blake with a fourth best score of 24 at LH and Walt with a fourth best score 23 at Eloy and Jerry with a fourth best score of 25 at Tangent. Blake does not have a good fifth score so must win outright so needs an additional 3 points. This requires a win with 7 entrants- possible at LH, not so at likely at Eloy and practically zero at Wayawanda. Walt is similar but as a better tie breaker score (*28) so he just needs a tie so to improve his fourth best score of 23 points so a 5-entrant win would put him in a tie-win position, likely at LH and perhaps Eloy. Jerry needs 2 more points over his fourth best score of 25 so he needs a 7 entrant win for first place.

F1C is all but mathematically done with Faust Parker (103 points) the only flyer currently meeting the 3-site rule. Even if California Cowboy, Guy Menanno, won Wanawanda (he already has Eloy and two LH scores so needs a third site) the possibility of 11 entrants for the needed 4 bonus points could only happen in a parallel F1C universe.
If you are still with me, this tedious exercise could continue but I’ll hit just a couple more highlights.
Bob Hanfords looks to win F1P.

F1G has a good story with Tif O’Dell and Jerry Fitch both 104 points behind the leader Geralyn Jones with 107 points. I leave the development of the various scenarios to the readers!
Looks like I’ll win F1H by winning the NATs that had the ONLY bonus point this year.  Blake takes second with 7 wins. We’re in a sad state of affairs in this event. Other than the Nats with 5 entrants the other 13 contests had three or less entrants with 8 of those with only 1 entrant.

F1J is resurging. Faust Parker with 100 points is in the lead with Mike Mckeever next with 99 and then Daryl Perkins with 98. Mike needs one bonus point so needs to win a 5-entrant contest. Daryl has winning tie breaker scores, so he just needs to win at Eloy or Wanyawanda to improve his fourth best score of 23 to 25 points for a tie-win or a 7-entrant win at LH.

F1Q is a tight race with several possibilities for the lead to change. The interesting note is the leader, Aram Schlosberg only has 4 scores, they are obviously good with a total of 103. Jack Murphy on the other hand, in second place has 12 scores and Julie Parker in third has nine scores. Jack needs to win a 7-entrant contest for the tie-win not likely even at LH Patterson— but you never know! Julie would need a 9-entrant win, again not likely.
Jack Murphy is in the F1S lead with 102 points over tied Frank Mennano and Julie Parker, both need 9 entrants win to overtake Jack.

For 2023, due to the limited number of F1E sites, the rule was changed for F1E only to count 3 scores from the same site. Mike McKeever is in first and there are no more F1E contests this year so, the math is done and I’m confident in announcing this victory.

I thank the group of people that I often send a draft copy of the excel spreadsheet for review and correction. This is a limited distribution but is open to those who enjoy picking flakes of pepper out of the salt. If interested, contact me at the email below.

By Jay Smith, Executive Editor | jays@modelaircraft.org

“EVENT NO. 6, Mulvihill Trophy Duration Race for Model Airplanes”, was the official name given to the event that was part of the 1923 National Air Races held in St. Louis. The Mulvihill Trophy was named after Bernard Mulvihill, then vice president of the NAA, who helped with prize money and the trophy that bears his name.
E.J. Lange won the first contest with a time of 4 minutes, 22.6 seconds. Since then, 95 additional names have been added to the trophy, including this year’s winner, Hope Finn. The Nats were not held during World War II, so it will be 2026 before the 100th name is added.
The trophy is on display at the National Model Aviation Museum, and I admit to staring at it on a few occasions, thinking about a century of competition and the ways that the hobby has changed throughout that time.

Some descendants of Bernard Mulvihill have attended recent Nats and present awards. It is great to see this event and the Nats still going strong !

[Rules from the AMA Rule book. MULVIHILL RUBBER MODEL EVENT 120. A Mulvihill Rubber model has no design restrictions except that the projected area of the wing shall not exceed 300 square inches. November Aeromodeller Part 1 F1A

The November issue of Aeromodeller had the first part of their report on the 2023 World Champs by Colin Sharman who has just taken over from Andrew Boddington as the editor. It is an excellent report. I must admit that I did have some initial qualms about it’s authenticity when firstly I saw the well known Scottish Aero-sportsman Chris Edge on the UK team and on top of that an article with CHE and no mention of either Haggis or Chickens. I was assured when I saw the presence of UK regulars TM Alan Jack and other Team Members  John Carter,  Stuart Darmon and Kris Best.  I look forward to part two
